The Ship

Royal Caribbean's Monarch of the Seas
Here's the ship, the Monarch of the Seas. Inaugurated in 1991, the Monarch is a relatively new and large ship. The ship displaces 73,941 tons and employs 822 crew members. When full, the Monarch accommodates 2,354 passengers in a style superior even to really nice land resorts. Here are some details:
Stateroom. You'll find amenities in your stateroom like a telephone, TV showing satellite programming and first-run movies, pillow chocolates and 24-hour room service. The stateroom is smaller than a hotel room (it's a ship, after all), but plenty big enough with lots of clever storage space. The cabins are all pretty much the same size (119 to 122 square feet) until you get up to the balcony cabins (category C) and above. You can have two twins or a queen-sized bed, unless you want to put more than two people in the cabin, which is accomplished with "upper" bunk beds, and can require a twin lower bed arrangement.
Activities. Aboard the ship there will be some or all of: exercise classes, facials, massages, language lessons, feature films (in cabin and in the cinema), cooking demonstrations, wine tasting classes, dance lessons, and more. Two show lounges accommodate headliners with all kinds of acts (Las Vegas-style, gymnasts, magicians, singers, you can never tell). Like to work out? There's an open-air basketball court, jogging area, lavishly equipped gym, aerobics room, and his-and-hers locker rooms with showers.
Pools. There are two swimming pools and two whirlpools.
Dining. There are two elegant formal dining rooms, an alternative casual cafe, and the aforementioned 24-hour room service if you need some peace and quiet. Also a champagne bar and 8 others bars or lounges. Almost all your food is included in the cruise fare (not caviar, for example), and alcohol and soft drinks are extra.
Wheelchairs. Although the Monarch is not ADA compliant, there are wheelchair-accessible staterooms available upon request in certain categories. Please contact Evan directly if this may be of interest to you.
On shore. What to do ashore? You'll have more options than you could possibly know what to do with at every port of call, ranging from the ever-popular stay on the ship and relax, to taking one of the many optional shore excursions. Or set out on your own. We'll be looking at shore excursions in detail after RCCL publishes their schedule and costs.
Kids. Do you have kids? The ship has a children's playroom, a teen disco, and a game room. There is a supervised program for toilet-trained kids aged 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, and a teen program for kids 13-17 aboard. Activities include Adventure Science, karaoke, themed parties, sports tournaments and talent shows.

The Itinerary
The Monarch will sail a Southern Caribbean itinerary, which is less touristy and features more natural beauty than other Caribbean itineraries:

Once you book your cruise, you will get access to the downloadable 50+ page port-of-call destination report that includes an incredible wealth of detail on each of these spots. To read it, you'll need the free Adobe Acrobat reader; if you don't already have it installed, download it by clicking here.
Prices
Pricing includes: cruise, taxes, port charges, transfers, government fees, and even Airborne Express shipping of documents to you. These prices may change by a little bit thanks to extra discounts or increases in things like government charges, but it won't be major. Airfare and travel protection are extra.
Five each of the following categories of cabins are set aside for the group, available on a first-deposited, first-reserved basis. In the event that all five cabins of the category you request are already reserved, Evan will contact Royal Caribbean and attempt to reserve an additional cabin in your desired category, or will contact you directly to discuss alternatives.
All of these cabins are booked as guarantees, which means that the stated cabin or better is guaranteed. This is a great deal because free upgrades frequently occur!
Airfare. You can either buy airfare from the cruise line, or not (e.g., if you can find a better price independently or use frequent flier miles). Here is the approximate per-person price for cruise line airfare and transfers from the following cities ("approximate" because the cruise line reserves the right to pass along any changes in taxes or surcharges like the recent fuel surcharge):
We can get airfare prices from other cities if you need it.
If you're thinking of going solo, you have two options. One is to pay a single rate, which is generally double the double-occupancy rate. Or, [Your Group Leader] will be happy to work on getting a roommate for you. When requesting a quote as a single please be sure to specify in the comments area whether you want a cabin to yourself, or whether you want a roommate with whom to split the cost of the cabin.
Options. At your option, the other things you might want to consider are:
A pre- or post-cruise package in San Juan if you want to spend more time exploring the city and the island
Costs not included. Meals are included in your cruise fare, but not alcoholic beverages and sodas. Tipping in cash at the end of the cruise for good service is customary, with "typical" tips as follows: $3.50 per person per day for your waiter and the same for your room steward, $2.00 per guest per day for the assistant waiter, and a discretionary amount if your head waiter provided any special service for you. Tips for alcoholic beverages and sodas are automatically added. Organized shore excursions cost extra, as do optional ship services like laundry, casino, spa and salon.
Next Steps and How to Book
There are 20 cabins set aside in the categories mentioned above which are held until August 19. Booking early makes it more likely that the cabin category you want will be available.
When you're ready to book, you will reserve a particular cabin and put down a deposit on it of $250 per person. The balance is due at least 60 days prior to departure and will be automatically charged to the credit card you used for deposit about 67 days prior to departure (4/25/01). There are two ways to book online:
Cancellation Penalties
The cruise line has the following cancellation penalties (which is why trip protection is recommended, in case you or an immediate family member fall ill at the last minute):
In addition, charges a $50 per cabin fee on any cancellation, but you can apply this to any other cruise booking for 12 months.
